Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities announces 30% Ontario Tuition Grant

On January 5, Minister Glen Murray, along with Premier Dalton McGuinty, announced that Ontario students can now apply for the new 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant to help with their fees for the upcoming winter semester.

The 30% Off Ontario Tuition Grant means students enrolled in a university or college degree program will save $800, and those enrolled in a college diploma or certificate program will save $365.

This September, the permanent 30% Off Ontario Tuition grant will apply to both semesters, which means a savings of $1600 for university and college degree students and $730 for college diploma and certificate students.

During lean fiscal times, your Member of Parliament and Premier remain committed to building the best-educated workforce in the world to help us attract more jobs and new investment.

Community Skating Parties

On Wednesday, December 14, Glen Murray and his constituency office kicked off its Free Public Skate at Moss Park Arena on Sherbourne Street. With the help of local volunteers, the office provided skates, free of charge, along with hot chocolate and snacks to warm up.

The free skating program has been carried on by Glen Murray since 2010, and has become an annual tradition.

Every Wednesday from 4:00pm – 5:00pm, until March 28, kids of all ages are welcome to join the free skate and enjoy hot chocolate and snack. On March 14, the program’s hours will be extended to run from 3:00pm – 5:00pm for a March Break Skating Party.

January is Alzheimer Awareness Month: “Let’s Face It. Get the Facts.”

Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects more than 180, 000 Ontarians. More than half a million families and caregivers are dealing with it. Each year, the Alzheimer Society of Canada launches a national campaign to help educate the public about the disease, warning signs and early detection.

Knowledge is power. Getting the facts about Alzheimer’s and early diagnosis can help you stay active, independent and healthy longer.

Ontario is proud to support the Alzheimer Society of Ontario’s First Link program, which connects persons recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to support services.

Simple changes around the home, such as installing grab bars in the shower, can help make the living environment safer for a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Ontario’s new Healthy Home Tax Credit, if passed, would help ease the cost of making homes safer by providing a credit of up to $1,500 for up to $10,000 in renovations.

Caregivers looking after a loved one with the Alzheimer’s would benefit from the provinces’ new Family Caregiver Leave Program. The program would, if passed, provide unpaid job-protected leave of up to eight weeks per year to an employee to care for a sick or injured family member.

Our Guide to Advance Care Planning provides seniors and their families with useful tips and information about planning for future care needs. The guide is available online at www.ontarioseniors.ca
